A Free Progressive Metronome Every Piper Should Try

One of the most effective ways to improve your piping is also one of the simplest: practice with a metronome. If you've watched any of our lessons on using a metronome effectively, you'll see the value in this tool.

Piper Henrik Hjortshøj has created a completely free Progressive Metronome designed specifically for pipers. Instead of stopping every few minutes to increase the tempo, you simply choose:

  • Your starting tempo
  • Your target tempo
  • How quickly you'd like the tempo to increase (for example, 1 BPM every 2, 4, or 8 bars)

The metronome automatically increases the speed as you play, making it an excellent way to develop technique, consistency, and control without trying to jump ahead too quickly.

A few things we particularly like:

  • âś… Completely free
  • âś… No installation required
  • âś… No registration, ads, cookies, or tracking
  • âś… Works in any modern web browser
  • âś… Can be downloaded and used offline on your computer, tablet, or phone

If you're working through exercises, embellishments, or learning a new tune, this is a great way to build speed the right way.

You use it directly in this blog post (above) or it can download it here:

Many thanks to Henrik Hjortshøj for creating the tool and generously making it available to the piping community. If you're looking for another way to make your practice sessions more productive, give it a try!
